WebIn July 1816, the French frigate Medusa ran aground on a sandbar 40 miles off the coast of Senegal. Forced to abandon ship by the captain, 150 men and women embarked on a makeshift raft so overloaded that they were up to their hips in water. But their ordeal was only beginning .. Impressed by accounts of the shipwreck, the 25-year-old artist Théodore Géricault decided to create an oil painting based on the incident and contacted the writers in 1818. His work depicts a moment recounted by one of the survivors: prior to their rescue, the passengers saw a ship on the horizon, which they tried to signal.
